Container planning calculator

Container Capacity Calculator

Compare estimated carton capacity for 20GP, 40GP and 40HC containers using carton dimensions, weight and payload limits.

  • Free to use
  • No sign-up required
  • 20GP, 40GP & 40HC

Enter carton details

Compare theoretical 20GP, 40GP and 40HC carton capacity as you enter values.

Carton dimensions

Use the outside dimensions of one packed carton.

Carton weight & shipment

Weight is optional; zero means payload is not evaluated.

This estimator tests six axis-aligned carton orientations using a regular grid. It is not a 3D packing simulation.

Planning estimate only. Actual equipment dimensions, tare weight and payload vary by manufacturer, shipping line, equipment and local transport rules. Door openings, pallets, dunnage, securing and real loading practice can reduce usable capacity.

How to use

Compare container capacity in five clear steps.

Enter one packed-carton size, its gross weight and shipment quantity to compare the same planning assumptions across three common container types.

  1. 1

    Enter carton dimensions

Add the outside dimensions of one packed carton.

  2. 2

    Add carton weight

Use gross weight per carton to check the payload limit.

  3. 3

    Enter shipment quantity

Add the total cartons you need to ship.

  4. 4

    Compare container capacities

Review 20GP, 40GP and 40HC under the same assumptions.

  5. 5

    Check the limiting factor

See whether dimensions or payload limits each container first.

Use cases

What this calculator helps with.

Use a clear single-carton planning baseline before selecting equipment or reviewing a supplier packing list.

Container planning

Compare estimated carton capacity before you request FCL equipment.

Supplier packing review

Check whether supplied carton size and weight support the planned load.

FCL shipment preparation

Estimate how many tested containers a known shipment may need.

Carton optimization

See when carton dimensions create unused container space.

Container selection

Find the smallest tested container that fits one shipment under current assumptions.

Import shipment planning

Bring dimensional and payload assumptions into an early logistics plan.

Transparent methodology

Formula & assumptions.

This is a regular-grid planning estimate, not an advanced 3D packing or operational loading simulation.

Calculation formula

Carton CBM = length × width × height in meters

Orientation fit = floor(container L ÷ carton A) × floor(container W ÷ carton B) × floor(container H ÷ carton C)

Dimensional capacity = maximum fit across six axis-aligned orientations

Weight capacity = floor(container payload ÷ carton weight)

Estimated capacity = lower of dimensional and weight capacity

Volume utilization = cargo volume at capacity ÷ geometric internal volume

Weight utilization = cargo weight at capacity ÷ payload

Containers needed = ceil(shipment quantity ÷ estimated capacity)

Planning presets

  • 20GP: 5.9 m × 2.35 m × 2.39 m internal dimensions; 33.1 m³ geometric volume; 28,000 kg payload.
  • 40GP: 12.03 m × 2.35 m × 2.39 m internal dimensions; 67.6 m³ geometric volume; 26,700 kg payload.
  • 40HC: 12.03 m × 2.35 m × 2.69 m internal dimensions; 76 m³ geometric volume; 26,500 kg payload.

Estimate limits

  • Actual internal dimensions, tare weight and payload ratings vary by equipment, manufacturer, shipping line and local transport rules.
  • This calculator tests a regular grid only. It does not simulate mixed orientations, interlocking, pallets, dunnage, load securing, door clearance or real warehouse loading practice.
  • A carton may fit within internal dimensions but still face door-opening or operational loading constraints. Confirm actual equipment specifications before loading.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers before you load.

Understand what the estimate compares and where actual loading requires additional operational checks.

How does this container capacity calculator work?⌄

It tests all six axis-aligned orientations of one carton in a regular grid, then compares the dimensional capacity with the payload-based capacity for each tested container.

Does it use only container CBM divided by carton CBM?⌄

No. It uses whole-carton grid fit along container length, width and height, so unused gaps caused by carton dimensions are reflected in the estimate.

Which containers are compared?⌄

This V1 tool compares planning presets for 20GP, 40GP and 40HC equipment.

Why can payload limit capacity before space is full?⌄

A dense carton can reach the stated payload before the dimensional grid is filled. The result then identifies Payload / Weight as the limiting factor.

What if carton weight is zero?⌄

The calculator keeps the dimensional capacity and marks payload as not evaluated. Use a real gross carton weight whenever it is available.

Does this guarantee that cartons can be loaded?⌄

No. Door openings, pallets, dunnage, load securing, operating practice and actual equipment can change physical loading feasibility.

Does it simulate mixed carton orientations or 3D packing?⌄

No. It tests six single-orientation, axis-aligned regular grids. Mixed orientations, interlocking layouts and advanced 3D loading belong to a later Container Load Estimator.

Does the recommendation mean the container is the cheapest option?⌄

No. It only identifies the smallest tested container that fits, or the option with the fewest containers when unique. Freight rates, availability and local charges still need commercial review.
