Air freight rates can vary by weight break, carrier, forwarder and contract. This planning estimate uses one rate per kg plus your entered other charges.

How to use

Plan air freight in five clear steps.

Use one shipment view to combine cargo dimensions, quoted rates and known air-freight charges.

  1. 1

    Add each cargo type

Enter carton dimensions, package quantity and actual weight.

  2. 2

    Confirm the air freight divisor

Use 6000, 5000 or the divisor supplied by your forwarder.

  3. 3

    Enter your freight rate

Use the rate per kg or lb from your freight quote.

  4. 4

    Add known other charges

Include handling, documentation, security or other known charges.

  5. 5

    Review weight and cost

See the billing basis, chargeable weight and planning estimate.

Use cases

What this calculator helps with.

Plan and compare an air shipment before you commit to a forwarder quote or packing decision.

Air freight quote preparation

Prepare chargeable weight and a cost estimate before requesting a quote.

Supplier packing list review

Check carton data, actual weight and the volumetric effect together.

Forwarder comparison

Use one cargo baseline when comparing forwarder rates and known charges.

Packaging optimisation

Identify the cargo type contributing most to shipment volumetric weight.

Import cost planning

Bring an air-freight estimate into your landed-cost planning.

Ecommerce replenishment

Plan the approximate cost of urgent inventory replenishment shipments.

Transparent methodology

Formula & assumptions.

This planning tool shows the weight logic and cost inputs behind the estimate.

Calculation formula

Volumetric weight = Length × Width × Height ÷ selected divisor

Chargeable weight = greater of rounded shipment actual and volumetric weight

Estimated total = chargeable weight × entered rate + other charges

Cost per package = estimated total ÷ total packages

Effective cost per chargeable unit = estimated total ÷ final chargeable weight

Air-freight assumptions

  • Landivexa applies rounding at shipment level for planning consistency.
  • Divisors, rounding, minimums and weight breaks can vary by carrier, forwarder, service and contract.
  • No live airline rates, fuel database, exchange-rate conversion, airport-pair pricing or live quote is used.
  • Only your entered rate and other charges are included; results are planning estimates, not invoices.
  • Air Freight only. Sea LCL uses different W/M or revenue-ton logic.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers before you ship.

Understand air-freight chargeable weight, pricing assumptions and planning limits.

What is air freight chargeable weight?⌄

It is the higher of your rounded shipment actual and volumetric weight under the selected air freight divisor.

How is air freight volumetric weight calculated?⌄

For each cargo type, length × width × height ÷ divisor gives volumetric weight per package. Landivexa then multiplies by quantity and sums the shipment.

Why does air freight use volumetric weight?⌄

Air cargo capacity is limited by both mass and space. Volumetric weight helps a carrier plan for packages that occupy more space than their physical mass suggests.

Should I use a divisor of 5000 or 6000?⌄

They are common planning examples, but the correct divisor depends on your carrier, forwarder, service and contract. Use a custom divisor when one is quoted to you.

What is the difference between actual and chargeable weight?⌄

Actual weight is the physical mass. Chargeable weight is the planning billing weight after comparing rounded shipment actual and volumetric totals.

How do I calculate air freight cost per kg?⌄

Enter the rate per kg or lb from your forwarder. This tool multiplies it by chargeable weight, then adds your optional other charges.

Are air freight rates always based on one rate per kg?⌄

No. Forwarders can apply minimums, weight breaks and other pricing rules. V1 uses one rate you enter for clear planning.

What are air freight weight breaks?⌄

Rates often vary at thresholds such as 45, 100, 300, 500 or 1000 kg. Your forwarder may quote different rates for those brackets.

Does this calculator include fuel or security surcharges?⌄

It does not fetch surcharge data. Add any known total handling, documentation, security or other air-freight charges in Other charges.

Is this a live air freight quote?⌄

No. This is a planning estimate based entirely on your cargo values, divisor, rate and other charges.

Can I calculate multiple carton sizes?⌄

Yes. Add up to 20 cargo types and the calculator will update one shipment-level estimate instantly.

Is this suitable for sea freight?⌄

No. Sea LCL commonly uses W/M or revenue-ton logic and should be calculated separately.
